Chipped Beef Jerky on Toast Recipe
This creamed chipped beef recipe is wildly delicious! Chunks of cooked beef are smothered in a comforting gravy and served over toast, eggs, potatoes… anything! It's a super easy, cozy meal.
Key Ingredients
Beef – There are two ways to go here: jarred dried beef or freshly shaved beef. I've done both but jarred dried beef is INCREDIBLY salty, so I don't recommend it. If you really want to use it, I highly suggest rinsing and soaking the beef pieces in hot water several times. The amount of sodium in jarred beef is insane. Go with shaved beef steak (also perfect for slow-cooker Italian beef sandwiches, slow cooker Phillies and these Cajun cheesesteak sammies.)
Texas Toast – I really like creamed chipped beef on cheesy Texas Toast. The cheese layer is delicious and acts as an excellent barrier for the sauce, so the toast doesn't get mushy.
How to make creamed chipped beef from scratch
STEP 1: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Chop beef steak and add to skillet. Mix in salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and thyme and saute until beef is cooked. This will only take a few minutes since beef is thin. Remove beef from skillet; set aside and keep warm.
STEP 2: Meanwhile, bake Texas toast in the oven according to package directions. Melt butter in the skillet, then whisk in flour, cooking for a minute. Slowly add milk, whisking continuously, and then add the black pepper and cayenne. Let the mixture cook until it reaches a thickened gravy consistency. Add beef back in and heat through.
Step 3: Spoon over hot, cheesy Texas toast.
